Biblical leadership in the Christian church

An important debate in the Christian church today is the biblically correct form of church government. Charismatic churches tend to emphasise a strong leadership model consisting of one or a few leaders. This leadership model may have very little checks and balances, or not existing at all. To some extent this emphasis is a reaction to the democratic model which dominates many Calvinistic or other traditional evangelical churches. However, this emphasis is based on an inadequate understanding of biblical leadership. Apart from that, such emphasis on strong leadership may easily deteriorate into an excessive use and even abuse of power in the church. Read more


Deception and discernment in the Christian church

In 1 Chronicles 12:32 we read about the anointing of the sons of Issachar. The members of this tribe in Israel had a special anointing to know the times and seasons ‘with knowledge of what Israel should do’. This verse shows that we must know the times and seasons of the Lord in order to know how we should act. I believe that the Dutch church lives now in a season as described in Amos 7:7-9 and in Malachi 3:3. Just like the season described by Malachi in his book, there is a strong expectation of a major spiritual breakthrough in the nation of God’s power and Glory. But this breakthrough also comes with an intensive purification of the ‘sons of Levi’, whether we like it or not. The sons of Levi are a picture of the church and her leaders. The spiritual season described in Amos 7 is characterised by God’s application of His plumb line to his people. Read more
